We all have a negative inner critic I’ll call the Judge. We weren’t born with it but most of us certainly have one now. It’s just part of the training we receive as humans.

I could go into great detail about why we have one, where it comes from, and all of that, but I will spare you and just go into how to move beyond the Judge or even better. how to convert the resistance of the Judge back into inspiration for moving forward.

To make this a permanent transition for yourself, first you must realize the negative critic (for which you may have so much disdain) is your friend. Yes, the Judge is your friend. At one time or another in your life your critic was born to save you from being hurt really bad. So he/she is your friend and needs to be treated as such.

Second, you need to talk to this part of yourself. Trying just to force it out will only cause further resistance to your efforts.

What do you say to the Judge?

  • I am sorry that I have not come to you before.
  • I am sorry that I tried to force you out of my life.
  • I am sorry that I have not understood the significant role you have played in my life — and the value of that role.
  • But the truth of the matter is that I do not want to move forward without you and, since you are such a significant part of me, I cannot move forward without you.
  • But to take the necessary steps that we need you to change, I want you to realize that we have moved away from that from which you were created to protect me. We are safe.
  • I need you to step away from the valuable role you have played for me thus far and join us in the flow of where we are going. And I need for you to do that right now.
  • Thank you for accepting my apology. Thank you for forgiving me. And, most of all, thank you for trusting me enough to take this very important step forward.

Relax. Tune in and repeat the above words as often as you need to throughout the day or whenever the Judge shows up. Be gentle and loving — but firm.

Over time the Judge will convert and transform into becoming the asset you need him/her to be. Until that joyful time arises, keep writing; keep writing with my CD (if you don’t have a copy, the writing audio can be found here) playing in the background. It has taken you a significant amount of time to build up the resistance associated with the Judge and it will take some time to dissolve it. Be patient. Be consistent. Keep writing.

The time will come when you no longer feel any resistance.
