Autumn is far and away my most favorite season. So much so that we christened our beloved daughter with the middle name, “Autumn.”
Despite my love of it, Autumn is the most trying of all seasons. Somewhere between the end of September and October, all the tasks my soul insists be completed begin to pile up like fallen leaves.
Over the last few decades, I’ve noticed this is commonplace, not only in my life but also in the lives of authors I’ve had the pleasure to work with.
If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed, caught off-guard or even attacked by unexpected issues or incidents supposedly appearing out of nowhere, you’re not alone.
So what do you do when feeling inconvenienced by your unique version of “Autumn Falls?” That’s what this writing exercise is designed to answer for you.
Before you write, though, remember to prepare. As with every writing exercise I will share, follow these steps beforehand to enter into your Divine Author Within (DAW) state.
- Set a time in which you will be undisturbed for at least 45 minutes
- Turn on the meditative Writing Audio that is played at all of our retreats. (If you don’t have a copy already, it can be downloaded here as the free gift for this week).
- Close your eyes, focus on your breathing, and just relax.
After you’ve completed these steps, allow each of the situations you are dealing with to appear in your mind. As each situation steps forward, sit for a few minutes and let it speak to you. Open not only your ears but your heart to the process. Let yourself truly hear it.
Let it speak to you and to take you to the real heart of why it is appearing in your life right now. After you have heard it out, open your eyes and write down what it had to say to you. Repeat this process until you have moved through each issue.
After completing the above, close your eyes and collectively meet the issues that stepped forward in your Divine Author Within (DAW) state one last time. It’s now your turn to pose situations or questions to each issue.
Open your eyes and write down what they have to say as each response appears. Go through this exercise until all of your questions have been answered.
By the way, you can expect these writing exercises to begin appearing as part of my weekly blogs. What better way is there to truly get an author to connect with his/her higher self and purpose than to bring them to write?
See you soon … Tom
